‘Talk with Wine’ April 10th 2024 @ 7:15pm

Peter Davenport will give a talk on ‘The People of Roman Bath’. This talk will give some fascinating insights into the lives and concerns of Roman Bath’s residents and visitors. After the Roman conquest of Britain, Bath was recognised as a site of strategic importance and a military presence was established to guard the pass through the Cotswolds and the crossing of the Avon. The earliest people in Roman Bath were therefore soldiers, Legionaries and Auxiliaries. In the following centuries, based on the hot springs, Aquae Sulis became an overwhelmingly civilian religious and recreational centre. We only have fragments of the lives of visitors and residents, but these throw a fascinating light onto those long-ago people.

Peter is a leading authority on Roman Bath and is best known in Bath for being Director of Excavations for the Bath Archaeological Trust from 1980 until its closure in 2005. This was followed by many years at Cotswold Archaeology retiring in 2019. His publications include ‘Medieval Bath Uncovered’ and ‘Roman Bath: A New History and Archaeology of Aquae Sulis’. Peter is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a member of the Institute for Archaeologists and of the Vernacular Architecture Group. He is a Trustee of the Roman Baths Foundation.

This talk will take place in the Sophie Cameron Centre at the Royal High School. For more information and tickets go to www.millenniumgreen.org.uk/events.

The 2023 Lansdown Open Gardens

This year’s Lansdown Open Gardens on June 11th were a great success despite some rain early in the afternoon. Over 340 visitors, a record number, viewed six wonderful gardens around Lansdown. The plant sale on the Millennium Green did a roaring trade, and many visitors enjoyed scrumptious cakes and teas in the St. Stephen’s Centre.

Overall the event raised over £3200 towards the upkeep of the Millennium Green. Many thanks to all the helpers and volunteers who made that day such a success.

‘Talk with Wine’ April 28th 2023

The fundraising ‘Talk with Wine’ on April 28th was very successful with over 50 attendees and a total of over £560 raised towards the upkeep of the Millennium Green. Sarah Simmonds gave a fascinating talk about the very special features that qualify Stonehenge and Avebury for their place on the World Heritage List as well as the challenges of managing these complex cultural landscapes.

Our next fundraising event will be the Lansdown Open Gardens on Sunday June 11th. We hope to have six gardens open across Lansdown plus a Plant Sale and cakes and teas on the Millennium Green. Our intention is to hold another ‘Talk with Wine’ in the Autumn.

Renewal Work On Paths Complete

The ongoing project to renew the paths on the Millennium Green is now complete. Many thanks to Duncan Spooner and his team for their hard work on a wet Friday to get the job completed. This means that the Green is ready for a good number of visitors during Spring and Summer

This means that two planned projects on the Millennium Green are now complete. The replacement of the rotten decking by the pond as well as the path renewal. The next project is the installation of a new 1000 litre rainwater tank which will enable much more use of rainwater for watering on the Millennium Green. The new tank has been delivered and is in place awaiting connection to the gutters. The other project planned for the Spring is to put new playbark down around the fort and the pig.

We are grateful for a legacy and for all the financial support that we get from our supporters to help fund these projects.

‘Carols on the Green’ December 7th 2022

The ‘Carols on the Green’ on December 7th was a great success. The weather was perfect for the event with a clear sky and an almost full moon giving a wonderful frosty and crisp seasonal atmosphere.

Over 80 people attended, and the CitySound Voices Bath Choir gave a rousing rendition of favourite carols.

Sales of mulled wine, mince pies, cake, biscuits and seasonal produced went very well. The frosty evening certainly encouraged the sales of mulled wine. Overall the evening made a profit which will go towards the upkeep of the Millennium Green.

Many thanks to the CitySound Voices Bath choir for their excellent singing. Many thanks to Trustees Chris Melbourne, Peter Akbar and Anne Love for organising the event and thanks to all the other helpers. It is our intention to make this an annual Christmas event.

See below for a gallery of photos from the evening.
